Newborn Photography Props – Newborns by Nicola – Angus, Scotland Baby Photography Studio
here I saw this meme a while back and it still makes me laugh…
I LOVE props! Im not gonna lie! Anyone who has been in my studio can attest to that fact. I have a ridiculously large selection of props… no headbands as large as the one above mind you.
I like to keep props somewhat subtle unless it is a set up geared towards something important to the family. For example in my last blog post about baby Innes (which you can see HERE) I was given the brief that they wanted an image for their study in their home and they had brought along a selection of books. So we created this image of little Innes who has fallen asleep reading his bedtime stories with his Daddy’s glasses on! I LOVE this image because it is personal to the family and it is fun!
I also had an awesome session recently where the Daddy is an Ice Hockey player so of course we had to have fun with that! Little Andrews Grandmother had brought along little crocheted ice hockey skates and Mummy and Daddy had also brought along some of the Ice hockey kit. We had a lot of fun with this and created some super cute images which are perfect for the families walls as they are so personalised to their wee family!
Here are a couple of the images wee created! I love how little AJ is dreaming of a potential future of Ice Hockey! And look how cute he is in Daddy’s helmet! I really didn’t think he was going to fit in the helmet because he is a wee bit of a chunky monkey (LOVE chunky bubs!, so cute, wee chubby baby thighs are the best!) but he did!
Personal props and ideas are my favourite however as mentioned before I do have a huge a prop supply! I like to add props that compliment the baby without overpowering, so that the baby is still the main focus. As much as I love my props, as do all my families who come to me for their baby photos I also adore just images of babies with no props at all. So on each pose I will always do a shot with accessories and one without so that my families have a choice on which they prefer!
Here are a few shots from recent sessions where you can see the sort of props I use to complement your beautiful baby portraits..
I hope you love these images as much as I do! Baby should always be the main focus as obviously it is a newborn photo session so all about them, not the props. We will always create a good variety of sweet and naturally prop-free images alongside all the prop shots.
We love using props my families bring along too, sometimes they make me cringe a little (hahaha) but if thats what my families want thats what they can have… more often that not though they do actually end up preferring the images I have styled better than what they had in mind (woohoo!). Just don’t ask me to make the image black and white and leave the hat or headband in colour 😉
